The Bitter Single Girl's Guide To Valentine's Day

I'll be the first to say it - I hate Valentine's Day. I hate the gawdy red gifts that line the supermarket shelves, the overpriced cards that we feel obliged to buy our other halves, the pressure on couples to go out and do something super expensive and even when I was in a relationship I wasn't a fan of the 14th February. Bitch, we should be appreciating each other every day of the year and not because some huge card companies say that we should but anyway I'm single for this Valentine's Day so I'm celebrating not having to celebrate February 14th and this is exactly how I'm doing it.

TREATS TREATS TREATS

I certainly won't be spending fifty quid on some red tat that someone doesn't really want but pretends to like anyway so I know exactly who I'm going to spending that saved money on. Yours truly. Just because you're single doesn't mean you can't treat yourself and VD is the perfect excuse to buy yourself your favourite flowers or a box of super expensive Ferrero Roches. The guys over at Eternal Blossom sent me this beautiful box of roses that are treated so they last over a year and if that's not the most romantic gift ever, for yourself or for a partner, then I don't know what is. I love a good bunch of flowers as much as the next gal but they do only last a short amount of time before they start wilting all over the windowsill. I've got these roses on my coffee table in my living room and they look absolutely perfect - yes us singletons deserve romance too even it is from ourselves!

NICE UNDERWEAR

Am I right in saying that us gals certainly don't wear super hot underwear to impress anyone other than ourselves? I know I wear my favourite matching underwear when I know for a fact no one's going to see it and that's because I just feel so much better for doing so. You know those days where you just want to feel super sassy like you can achieve anything? Whack on a matching set of bra and knickers and you can accomplish whatever you want. Most days I don't even muster up the motivation to put on a bra but hey, making myself feel super hot on Valentine's Day is as good a reason as any for changing things right?

MAKE VALENTINE'S DAY ABOUT APPRECIATING YOURSELF

I know that 14th Feb can be a tough day for people who are just going through a break-up or are feeling down about being alone but why can't we make it about us? I don't mean buying gifts or treating ourselves either but just making an effort to think "yeah actually I'm doing pretty good". Whether it's eating pizza in the bath with some candles lit (ahem, not that I've ever done that....), having a pamper evening or baking some indulgent cakes for yourself, remember that you deserve to be as happy as anyone in a relationship.

TRY AND APPRECIATE THE LOVE

I'll be the first one to roll my eyes if I see someone proposing in a very dramatic and public way on VD but really, despite being a bitter singleton I'm going to try and appreciate the love being spread. We're constantly bombarded with woe and despair for the most part, especially in the current political climate so I'm going to try and appreciate the day of love, even if I won't be getting any love myself.

How will you spending Valentine's Day this year?

  1. Haha! I'm the polar opposite. I love valentines day even when I was single.
It annoys me when people say it's a consumerist holiday so refuse to celebrate it. I guess those people hate Christmas even more (the most consumerist holiday of them all that lasts months instead of weeks) I didn't think so.
I love doing things with my partner and we do stuff together a lot, so an excuse to do more things together is great. I don't care about going out for meals or presents though, just being together is enough for me.
To summarise. If you hate Valentines day then you must hate Christmas. Both are religious holidays

    1. I don't hate Christmas actually (though I'm not it's biggest fan!), the reason I'm not a VD fan isn't just because it's a huge consumerist holiday but because I'm just not a soppy or overly affectionate type of person so it just isn't my thing, the same way as I'm just not a fan of New Year's Eve! :)

  2. I've always been a bit of a negative nelly towards Valentines day, and this year is the first time I'm in a healthy relationship with someone I love. Although we've both agreed that it's overpriced, and we'll just buy the onsale chocolates and celebrate it the day after!

  4. I'm with you! I'm not a fan of Valentines Day at all. I just think its a made up day to make people think they need to spend so much money. I definitely think you should celebrate love everyday and not focus on this one day.

  6. It's nice to celebrate the love in the world I guess... But I don't really do Valentine's Day either, haha! I do like the idea of pizza in the bath, though...

  7. I'm currently going through a break up so this was wonderful advice, might just eat some pizza in the bath that's an amazing idea! I've already bought myself 2 Kat Von D lipsticks for being a brave lil' soldier so far so I'll probably be treating myself more on that dreaded day. I'll maybe go to a museum and buy myself some flowers, why the hell not!

  8. This will be my boyfriend and I's fifth V-Day together, but we have no plans and never really do anything for it. The last two years we've just been out on a road trip like we do every weekend anyway haha! I do think it's a nice excuse to get dressed up and to plan something fun though :) xx

  14. Well, this year I spend Valentines Day reading the article https://onlinedivorcer.com/blog/changing-back-to-a-maiden-name-after-or-during-a-divorce-case as I was getting divorced and didn't celebrate it. Hopefully the next one would be better!
