The Best of Sixties Home Decor

If I had to choose a favourite decade for style and trends, it would undoubtedly be the 1960s. The colours, the patterns, the shapes, the clothes - what's not to love? My wardrobe is full of 60s inspired pieces and the decade gets a lot of attention in the world of fashion, with the trends coming back round season after season. However, the home decor side of the 60s kind of gets forgotten about in favour of really modernised decor and I think this is a real shame because the 60s inspired home decor available today is truly stunning. I do love modern interiors that you see all over Pinterest but in my view, a 60s themed living room or kitchen would be beyond amazing.

Before the outright gaudy colours and patterns that arrived with the 70s, the 60s were the start of the groovy vibe that soon took over. Mix that with a bit of a futuristic and understated vibe and you've got the perfect sixties themed style for your home. The ball chair is the perfect example of this. Simple but totally groovy, with bright colours that would look great in a minimalistic living room or bedroom, or clashed with some bright patterns and contrasting colours. For example, wrong for hay green printed cushion would look amazing against the bright red. the  I love the kind of outer space vibe that comes with this kind of decor - it's something that you can never get bored of and is such a refreshing style compared to a lot of the traditional home decor that is around these days.

One of the most versatile things about going for sixties decor, is the vast amount of colours that you can use. Pastel colours were big so if you wanted a more feminine, understated vibe you could go for light pinks and blues like in the Harto Marcel shelving system, or you could go all out groove and get all of the bright colours in. I personally think for a true sixties feel, the way to go is bright, but simple. Clash the colours and the patterns but don't have the gaudy patterns everywhere. Start with a simple, one colour feature piece like this beautiful golden yellow sofa and accessorise around that, clashing earthy colours and patterns like on the rug and the little bits and pieces of decor. Make it loud but classy.

All of these pieces are available from nest.co.uk, an independent luxury retailer which was founded in Sheffield. Nest stocks authentic, licensed original products making it the perfect retailer to go to when you want to channel the style of a particular decade in your home, whether it's the 50s, the 60s or the 70s and you can see from the collection above just how beautiful the pieces are.

What's your favourite decade?

  3. The 60s were so cool! Oh, the fashion and style and sexist overtones! Hahaha! For serious though, they somehow managed to nail futuristic designs with minimalism and prints. Love it! <3

  9. I personally find a lot modern interpretations of mid-century design to be really conservative and dull. I think there's a lack of color and imagination today. I'm not all that fond of the early American influence & French provincial style myself but it was hugely popular in average American homes at the time (and even now for that matter). If done right in the right home, like a Storybook Ranch house or mid-century cottage, I think it can look really cute. Just depends on how it's put together I suppose.
